In 1988 Ralph Renna stepped into the right situation at the right time. When he began his radio career at 88.3 WVCR FM. 25,000 watts was a lot of power for a small college radio station and he started by focusing on the underground music scene that was right in his backyard. At the same time, he was quickly connected with national bands, establishing his spot in metal, hardcore, rock, grunge, alternative and even hip hop scenes.
In the 90’s Renna had a fun stint with the Dallas Texas based radio station Z-Rock, who set up shop locally in Schenectady N.Y. Taking local music as far as he could. From 1998 into the early 2000’s , Renna was out of the radio game for a few years, but established himself as a musician.
In 2006, Capital Underground radio was born as an hour-long local music show on 104.9 WZMR-FM “The New Edge.” Playing and interviewing all genres of underground acts, CU quickly became the driving force in local music. At this time Renna started writing about local and national acts for The Troy Record newspaper, which led to blogs on Times Union (Crumbs) and Schenectady Gazette websites. He also made contributions to The Spot 518 in 2017 and spinning local music on 106.1 The X, RadioRadioX.com and The Xperience Monthly
Capital Underground is more than just a radio show -it quickly expanded into a television show. Midnight metal cruises? Yes, bands on a boat floating up and down the Hudson River while pounding rock and metal. Capital Underground “Live,” is a local music showcase, with radio interviews, and video shoots.
The resume speaks for itself, Ralph Renna’s Capital Underground has offered the biggest platform for any local artist to be seen and heard. Clubs, concert halls, festivals and fairs as well as numerous compilation CDs to showcase the 518 over the past 16 years were, and will be showcased here.
